Using Everyday Anomalies to Learn about the Familiar

“Everyday anomalies” are tiny curious moments, taking place in the middle of the familiar flow of everyday life. They are often experienced in an absent-minded mood, when the routinized perceptive or cognitive patterns are disturbed by something different from the usual. Anomalies can be spontaneously born in the environment or in the head of the person experiencing them, or organised by a prankster, artist or activist.

On this website you can browse the collection of the Everyday Anomaly Archive for inspiration, and submit your own anomalous experience to the collection. There is also a growing selection of tools for designing your own anomalies.

This site is the home of an ongoing Doctor of Art project of the visual artist Oona Tikkaoja (Aalto University, Finland). The photo collages are made by John Helola.
