Fish & Chips

We we eating raw, salted salmon and chips on a family dinner. I mentioned something about raw fish and sushi. At the same moment my husband said: “you should pour salt to your hand”. He was talking to the kids, who wanted to add some salt into their chips, just to avoid them pouring too much from a big packet. For a while my mind which was oriented towards foreign food traditions (remembering our trip to Japan where our hosts told us how to eat different dishes) was confused: why wasn’t I familiar with this Finnish tradition of salting your hands before eating salty fish (and what would be the purpose of that anyway?)
